Introducing...
Colleagues,
I’m pleased to announce the appointment of three new sustainability interns; Molly Dilg, Katie Elliott and David Sullivan. Each of the interns brings a substantial record of green advocacy and leadership, to support and enhance sustainability efforts at CC. As a team, the interns and I will form the core staff of the emerging Sustainability Office at CC. Based on current priorities, we divided responsibilities in the following way:
David Sullivan – coordinating and providing resources to the ongoing CC sustainability website redesign, facilitating communication and acting as liaison between the sustainability office, the sustainability council and ENACT
Katie Elliott – planning and implementing the new “CC Sustainability Tours” program offering the campus a behind the scenes look at the ongoing greening of CC, coordinating CC participation in sustainability webinars and teleconferences
Molly Dilg – coordinating and promoting CC participation in the effort to prevent Lexam for drilling for gas near the Baca campus in Crestone, collecting information on available technologies and solutions for making our CC transportation fleet more green friendly
All three interns will help our office:
coordinate campus publicity about the upcoming CC energy audit and sustainability plan through the Brendle Group
connect to regional sustainability efforts such as the Earth Day Planning Committee, Focus the Nation, a local green ballot initiative, and connecting to Colorado Springs Utilities
assess possible programs proposed by external consultants and corporations interested in partnering with CC on sustainability projects
the interns offered to assist the Campus Sustainability Council and its subcommittees as needed
Our new interns join the sustainability interns working out of the college communications office. We will be coordinating our work. This is so exciting.

Sustainability Office Interns
Green Enthusiasts,
I’d like to invite student applications to serve as Interns for the Sustainability Office. I’m looking for two talented students, with a substantial record of green advocacy and leadership, to support and enhance sustainability efforts at CC. The interns will report directly to me as Sustainability Coordinator. One intern will focus on program planning, development, support and implementation. The second intern will focus on research questions designed to foster CC’s sustainability agenda.
To apply send me a resume by the end of Block 3. Please indicate whether you are applying as the Sustainability Program Intern, Sustainability Research Intern, or both. I’ll contact successful candidates at the beginning of Block 4 to begin working immediately. And for those of you who know that I’ve been talking about this for a while – yes this will happen.
Blessings,
Bruce

Step it up
Sorry i could not make it to step it up but i was doing a class project helping a new local business with its grand opening that day. I thought that i had contributed enough to step it up by helping you find your funding.
Sodexho Sustainability Grants
A sudden burst of Sodexho "green-ness"
Sodexho and Colorado College Sustainability Grants:
At Sodexho we are charged with 'making every day a better day', and what
better way to accomplish this than to provide funding to address issues of
sustainability here at CC. Sodexho Campus Dining Services is pleased to
announce that we will award a total of $8,000 grants to students, faculty or
staff of The Colorado College during the 2007-2008 academic year to help with
one of the college's core values of "nurturing a sense of place and an ethic
of environmental sustainability". The amount of the grants will depend on the
projects and funding requested and the committee will determine how to divide
the $8,000 among the grant recipients. These grants may be used in areas such
as but not limited to; to further research, purchase equipment to enhance
sustainability, or to support an educational campaign on sustainability.
The Process:
Students, Faculty and Staff are encouraged to participate. All applications
should include the name (or names), addresses, phone numbers and email
addresses of all the people participating in the project. The application
should clearly define the project, target audience, scope of work to be
completed, detailed time line for the project including full completion,
anticipated budget, and projected outcome and sustainability benefit.
Deadline:
The deadline for grant submission will be the last day of Block III. All
submissions must be delivered via email to Shawn.Finnegan@SodexhoUSA.com no
later than 5:00 PM on November 21, 2007.

Science, along with two Colorado College Students.
The awards will be announced no later than the end of Block IV, and winners
will be notified by email and on both the Colorado College Sodexho Dining
Services web site and The Colorado College web site.
Evaluations:
The decision of the committee will be final and based on the following
criteria:
- Organization and clarity of the proposal
- Tangible results of the proposal
- Benefits to CC and the Colorado Springs community
- Timeline for accomplishment
- Demonstrated ability to carry out the project
- Amount of grant desired
Grants will not be awarded for proposals or projects already in progress or

Vandana Shiva video
If you missed the lecture, listen to it at
www.coloradocollege.edu/podcast
Also, Here's a short video of what she's up to.
http://www.linktv.org/programs/bullshit
Shiva's adversaries recently awarded her the "Bullshit Award" for sustaining poverty.
What do you think? Heroine or Villian?
Response to Jamie
DId not mean to offend
I did not mean to offend anyone with that post although it did sound heavy handed i just posted it to ruffle some feathers and get people talking both about the blog and ENACT. I agree with you that ENACT does great things and that the current leadership is quite effective and therefore we can have a very productive year. My argument for tangible things was more along the lines of the fact that we need things such as the CC compost that gets the entire campus thinking of sustainability not just the 50 of so people that show up to the GRT and the 20 or so that attend ENACT meetings. We have a great bunch of people this year in many influential positions and think that we can accomplish a lot, so lets get out there and make a difference. Furthermore, Bruce i did not mean for my earlier post to be seen as a personal attack on yourself, in fact i applaud you for stepping up this year and being our sustainability coordinator, you took on a great deal of work and responsibility simply because you think it is the right thing to do (and it is) and i thank you for that.

a rant from your sustainability coordinator
Jamie are you kidding us?
You seem to have exactly the opposite perception of ENACT's effectiveness than I do.
You mention composting at Rastall as the last big ENACT contribution (which by the way, just earned CC our only "A" on a national sustainability report card.
How did you miss ENACT's successful campaign to win LEED certification for the Cornerstone Arts Building, or fighting for CC to sign the President's Climate Commitment, which led to a $50,000 energy audit to serve as baseline data for a long range CC sustainability plan, and bringing new energy/organization/effectiveness to the Green Round Table. And hey, I'm only part-time, but why do you think Pres. Celeste asked me to serve as Sustainability Coordinator - do you think student pressure had anything to do with it? Should I continue?
I don't mean to sound surly, but the current ENACT leadership and membership is the most effective that I've seen in my 20 years at CC.

LGRT Outcome
The Leadership GRT proved to be somewhat of a good/tough process, and at this point I'd like to update everyone on the purpose, process, and progress of the LGRT.
PURPOSE:
To bring together the leaders of the campus green groups to represent the green student body and form an "asking" committee to the administration on sustainability issues that we see as outstretching the scope or responsibility of any one green group.
PROCESS:
We gather to whittle down these larger issues into three categories:
-Resolutions, which are "asks"
-Supports, which are a way of showing a thumbs-up to the admin. on processes that are already underway
-Recognitions, which are thank-yous or shout-outs to members of the admin./staff that have done great work
When the Resolutions, Supports, and Recognitions are decided, the LGRT drafts them up in a formal document to send through the Sustainability Coordinator to the appropriate members of the admin. with the invitation to read the document, and then meet with the LGRT to discuss the issues at hand. Hopefully from this meeting the admin. and the students will not only be on the same page, but also be excited about working together on the issues that the LGRT has specified.
PROGRESS:
The issues we've specified this fall are:
The Food Service/Sodexho Bid
Getting a Full-Time Sustainability Coordinator position created post-Bruce
Changing out the Vehicle Fleet
We will be drafting the formal document starting this block break, and will hopefully be meeting with members of the admin. by the end of 3rd block.
That's the news for now-- have a fine time over the break and unplug everything while you're gone!
Best,
EnAct co-chairs
Some news and reminders just to keep everyone updated:
-There will be a Senior insulation workshop the first Sunday 3rd block. Synergy will be running its annual blower door analysis so come learn what you can do to improve your heating bill this winter - It will definitely add up. If your interested in running a blower door for your house Synergy can help facilitate the process, but we need to reserve the blower door a week ahead of time.
-Synergy will be winterizing the garden and moving the herb garden 3rd block! stay tuned for more info...
-Come to blockly potlucks 2nd Friday of every block.
-The house is getting matching sail shades for the upstairs windows! If your interested in helping make the sailshades, or learning how they work, contact Synergy house or a resident at Synergyhouse@coloradocollege.edu.
-Synergy is open for groups interested in reserving the house for lectures, workshops, speaker receptions, meetings, etc(Contact a Synergy resident to plan or email Synergyhouse@coloradocollege.edu)
Winter is coming so be smart with energy use due to heating - remember to close windows while your heater is on. Don't forget to unplug all of your appliances and set your thermostat low while your gone during block break.
Much love,
-Synergy House Residents

The Leadership GRT
Thanks to all who came to the GRT last week-- it was a productive meeting that brought forth some strong ideas and greater cohesion within the campus green community-- just what we were hoping for!
As we discussed at the GRT, the best way for our voice to be heard by the administration is if we streamline our campus-wide sustainability goals and vote on them as heads of green groups in the form of Green Roundtable Resolutions. To do this we're holding:
THE LEADERSHIP GRT
THIS THURSDAY
9 PM
THE ERC, TUTT SCIENCE
Just one representative from each green group is needed, and we'd really like to see representation from the student green groups that were at the GRT, including:
CCCA
CC Farm
Synergy
Food Chained
Sacred Grounds
Roots n' Shoots
State of the Rockies
Sustainability Interns
ORC
PLEASE SEND A REP! And if your groups can't make it, please let us know.
See you soon,
Your loving EnAct GRT Committee

EnAct Meeting TONIGHT- 9:00 PM
As many of you are tuned in-- Bill McKibben, fantastic climate activist and all-around Good Guy is coming to speak in Shove tonight at 7:30, which conflicts with the EnAct meeting that is traditionally held at 8:00 in the ERC, Tutt Science.
Given that anybody who's involved or looking to get involved with EnAct should instead go to this talk, we're postponing the meeting until 9:00 PM, same place.
So c'mon out of Shove and b-line it for the ERC to shake out some ideas with EnAct.

STUDENT SUSTAINABILITY INTERNS WANTED
Positions abound, these days. Besides a green rep needed for the CCCA council, three new student positions have been created in Communications for Sustainability Interns. This is your chance to get paid for the work you've been doing in the past- and to get sustainability fully recognized on campus. Here is the job description and contact info if you're interested:
-----
YOU have ideas to make CC a more sustainable place.
WE have job openings for three sustainability interns, AND funding to achieve mutual project goals.
Sustainability Intern. The office of communications is seeking committed student partners to help make Colorado College more sustainable. This is a paid internship. Our goal is to facilitate positive environmental change at the college. This will be a collaborative effort with other individuals and groups on campus. Your ideas and passions count for a lot in a collective effort to engage other students, faculty and staff.
This is a great opportunity for a self-starter with a strong interest in sustainability coupled with dependable follow-through. You should expect to work primarily in teams, with some opportunities to pursue independent projects.
Under the auspices of the office of communications, you will have the flexibility to address a wide range of issues that impact environmental sustainability on campus. Approximately half of your time will be for projects assigned by the office of communications, having to do with research of particular issues, education of campus constituencies regarding sustainable practices, working with interns in compatible areas (e.g. State of the Rockies, KRCC) and on special projects (e.g. possible development of a sustainability report card for the college). The remainder of your time will be for projects initiated by the team of interns or yourself, working along the lines of making a proposal for a project that supports making CC more environmentally sustainable, creating a budget, securing approval and following through to achieve your goals.
The Office of Communications will also fund attendance at selected conferences.
The internships will be mentored by Jen Kulier (director of publications) and Karen To (director of new media/web editor), who are both on the Sustainability Council. You will work with others in the office of communications, and should see this department (including KRCC), and its multiple areas of expertise, as a readily available resource to advise and assist projects.
Hourly rate: $8.50
Must be able to commit to working 8 hours per week on average (taking into account the “seasonal” time demands of the block plan).
The internships will start at the beginning of Block 2.
Please contact Jen Kulier (jkulier@coloradocollege.edu) if interested.
Best,
Katie

"It's amazing how pervasive food is. Every second commercial is for food. Every second TV episode takes place around a meal. In the city, you can't go ten feet without seeing or smelling a restaurant. There are 20 foot high hamburgers up on billboards. I am acutely aware of food, and its omnipresence is astounding."

Success at the EnAct Catamount Retreat
Main Takeaways from the Retreat:
-New Mission & Guiding Principles for EnAct
-EnAct to serve as an umbrella organization for the Green Movement at CC
-EnAct to provide resources, encouragement and action opportunities to all levels of the campus community on green issues by bringing Green Groups together under the EnAct Network
-More excitement around the Green Movement with new EnAct Social Committee-- bringing us together at gatherings other than meetings
-New framework for problem-solving and solution outlines within EnAct- the GreenDoc
-Great Big List of Green Initiatives for the year, categorized and prioritized
Utterances of, "we should do this again" were abundant, and so with Howard's permission, a tentative thought for a return to Catamount would be to go and plan out the first GRT intitiative during third weekend this block, seeing as the first GRT should be occurring the second week of 2nd block. Please post thoughts, responses.
Here's to a weekend of good people, good food, and strong planning!
Best,
Katie

The 2008 Linnemann Lecture
PS
Check out the speakers at Ted.com. Thanks to Wiley Rogers for showing me this great site!
===========
Good morning everyone. I am starting the process to select our guest lecturer for this year's Linnemann Lecture on the Environment. I am asking for nominations from you for possible candidates. Please feel free to dream as big as you wish when considering who you would like to have as a speaker. Our parameters are simple: this year we are looking for a female who is involved in some area of environmental activism, teaching, research, policy, etc. We do have a budget, and can look into their fees at a later date, so dream big! Send your suggestions to me by September 28, complete with a short bio on the individual.
Once we have compiled a list of suggested speakers, the seniors will meet to rank their choices. I will then take the first five and see if any are available (that we can afford!).

Campus Sustainability Council Recap
-PCC Update/Energy Audit for campus
The administration is working on getting better footing with climate issues and by submitting an RFP (Request For Proposals) for energy auditing corporations, is certainly moving in the right direction to sign the PCC in the future. Right now we have a few companies outlined, and a new committee of 4 CSC members was created to further discuss, review, and attend interviews of possible auditors. The whole process of picking an auditor should be done by mid-December.
-The President's Alumni/Parent Council on Sustainability
This council was outlined as an outside, cost-efficient resource for the CSC that would provide expert information to us on any number of issues we choose to tackle on campus, be it solar engineering or wind farms...however no specifics like a meeting time with this council were mentioned, and it seems to be on hold, with few details available.
-AASHE Membership
Bruce Coriell will be talking to different parts of the admin. and figuring out if $1,000 is available for a membership. Another CSC member will be researching different higher education green organizations' memberships and will report on which ones are best for CC to join at the next CSC meeting.
-Facilities Director Search
Howard Drossman will be the "green" member on the search committee, making sure that whoever we choose to work for CC will be sustainably minded. There is a possibility that a student rep. could make it onto the committee, if anyone's interested, with the help of a CCCA (Sierra's) recommendation.
-Endowment Institute Report
Remember the report card of colleges' endowments and overall campus sustainability-- the one that CC wasn't included in? Well, now we're getting included, and the full evaluation of CC should be done before winter.
-New Freshmen Member(s) for the CSC
Wiley drafted up an application for one or two freshmen candidates to hop on the CSC. The other students on the CSC will decide which applicants will be accepted.
-Focus the Nation
Could use a student rep. from CC, seeing as Bill McKibben is coming to campus quite soon. Email Howard Drossman if you're interested.
-CC is installing a fancy energy-efficient water cooling system for our water main-- which will save a whole lot of C02 from going into the air-- roughly 96,000 tree's worth, I believe. Hooee.
!The next CSC meeting is Third Wednesday at 3:30 in the ERC!
Open-door, all are welcome to attend and see what's up.
As Ever,
Katie
EnAct Meeting minutes
Here is the meeting minutes from last meeting
Recap of summer/last year
President Celeste has set aside $30,000 for sustainable audit. Planning some thank you action for it.
Campus Sustainable Council has expanded its capacity, and number of students getting involved has also expanded.
Bruce Coriell, our Chaplain is now our new Sustainable Coordinator. We will be working with him a lot this year.
World Affairs
There will be a cooperate-based sustainable energy/living forum with speaker on Oct. 5. This is ways down our planning ability time, but there is a plan to get some poster board information about CC (and other college around here). More information will be discussed in the next meeting.
Food Chained
There will be a lecture on Sept. 12 (in WES Room at 6:30pm)and discussion in Sacred Grounds on Sept. 13 (TBA). For more details, please look at Food Chained info page below.
CC Farm info
They are holding farmer's market on Fridays. Also they will be working towards collecting compostable food scraps from apartments and off-campus housing. Keep a watch-out for more info.
Another piece of information, they are working to get an on-campus farming/gardening plot, yet we don't know where that may be.
Green Round Table
This year, we plan to have 4 GRT in total, 2 in each semester. Our 1st GRT will be held 2nd week of 2nd block. This year, we want to meet and discuss issues with Green groups in 1st meeting, and in 2nd meeting try to create a resolution that we could stick to. We are still planning to create a Green Handbook with contact info of heads of the group.
Also we will plan to create more rigid structure (and possibly time limits) so the discussion will not go for hours.
Reaching Freshmen
For campus activities fair, a information bullet points will be made for the freshmen to take a look at.
Catamount
There will be a leadership retreat this Saturday and part of Sunday, with camping. Meets at North side of library, at 9am on Saturday. Bring foods, tent, sleeping bag etc.
Other (maybe not too) small things
CCCA- Co-chairs will be meeting them, to get onto the same page.
EnAct TP- Just like Toilet Paper, there is some idea of creating some newsletter in the bathrooms. More details to come as we figure things out.
Catalyst Article- Submit perhaps once a block or so, to get students interested/involved.
Thank you for all of you who came to the meeting yesterday!

FOOD CHAINED UPDATE

Here are some morsels for your consumption,
FOOD CHAINED is rollin....

~~~~~~~~REFRESHMENTS FROM CC FARM BOUNTY~~~~~~~~~~~
"Organic:::Farming like there is a Tomorrow>>> from theory to policy and practice.”
Nick is a pioneer of the organic movement gaining experience from conducting organic systems research on his farm
with the USDA and participating in the national debates on the passage of organic laws and regulations, while also
operating his own commercial organic farm since 1979. Nick has been a policy advocate for ecologically sound organic
standards, regional food systems, science based research on organic systems, and strengthening the smaller family
farms which he believes provide the innovation and guidance for a more sustainable agriculture.
His whole farm production of vegetables, grains, livestock and forage uniquely positions him to answer questions such as:
Can organic farming really feed the world? Should you buy local or organic? What do all these labels really mean: “natural”,
“cage free”, “grass fed”, “made with organic”? Do our policies, such as the currently debated Farm Bill, help or hurt
sustainable practices?
Nick brings a unique insider’s perspective on how far organic farming has come in the last 30 years and where it is
headed. Please join us on September 13th in Sacred Grounds Coffee House to discuss “What you always wanted to know
about organic farming but were afraid to ask”
Welcome Back
For those of you who check up on the blog--
EnAct has an incredible amount of engaging activism to wrangle with this coming year, and we need a pow-wow ASAP to bring us back from our far-flung summers. After speaking to Howard Drossman about action with the administration over the summer, I learned of quite a few BIG THINGS that quietly changed while we were all off regaining our sanity. Juicy tidbits like:
-The Campus Sustainability Coucil has expanded, with two more student spots
-We have a Sustainability Coordinator
-Celeste is alotting at least $30,000 for a campus energy audit AND is doing so to garner strength to sign the PCC...
MY goodness, such sneaky things happen while we're away!
THIS is why we need to meet and discuss what's up, and how we should best allocate our time this year, preferrably SUNDAY NIGHT, if at all possible. My vote is for a big dinner/discussion at someone's house, but if we must use a space on campus, that's alright, too. Tuesday this week will be the regular EnAct meeting as usual, 8:00 in the ERC, however we need to meet sooner than that to get our act together and make a few quick decisions.
Word.
State of the Rockies: Fall Speakers
Hey all,
State of the Rockies is bringing in some interesting speakers as well. Bill Cronin who has challenged the concept of wilderness , a second round of Gloria Flora and Will Rogers (my pops) who works for a land conservation organization. We are looking forward to working with EnAct, Food Chained and other groups to be more student oriented and depart from the traditional image of State of the Rockies as a disconnected EV project.
Cornerstone LEED certification: a waste of resources
Due to this i propose that next year Enact/CC urbanists should draft up a series of building guidelines for new buildings and building renovations at colorado college.
for more information on the problems with LEED check out this article written by Randy Udall about why he has given up on the idea of LEED certification in favor of better options.
Administrative Decision on the PCC
Best,
Katie
____________________________________
Dear Katie, Charlie, Laura, and David,
Thank you for your thoughtful letter to the trustees and me, urging Colorado College to become a signatory to the American College and University Presidential Climate Commitment.
I discussed this matter in some detail with the Board of Trustees during their meeting here last week. Many of the trustees share our interest in achieving carbon neutrality and general sustainable practices at CC. As I told them, however, I am not inclined to sign the ACUPCC until I am assured that we can carry out the commitment it represents.
Thus I am forming an advisory council on sustainability, comprised of alumni, parents, and other experts. Their charge will be as follows:
One of Colorado College's core values is to "nurture a sense of place and an ethic of environmental sustainability." How well do we live up to this important value?
In 2004, President Celeste appointed a Campus Sustainability Council (CSC) to help promote environmental awareness; make recommendations to ensure a safe and healthy environment; promote resource conservation, energy efficiency, waste reduction and recycling, pollution prevention, and use of renewable resources; further long-range environmental planning; conduct regular environmental audits; and encourage incorporation of sustainability and environmental issues into the curriculum, among other activities.
As of 2007, Colorado College has made progress on sustainability, much of it due to the efforts of students and the CSC. We are working on our second LEED-certified building, the Cornerstone Arts Center. (Tutt Science Center is the other.) We pay a premium for wind power, which provides 15 percent of our electricity. We are exploring a move to 100 percent wind power and hope to have a plan before our Board this year. We recycle; we compost; we use only non-potable water on our grounds and are xeriscaping wherever possible. Several of our motor fleet vehicles have been replaced with hybrids.
To fully embody our commitment to sustainability, however, we have far to go.
The Colorado College Sustainability Presidential Advisory Council (Sus-PAC) will advise and assist the President, Dean, and Board of Trustees. The Sus-PAC will:
* Work closely with the Campus Sustainability Council to assess progress on sustainability measures
* Provide counsel on current and future directions in the areas of policy, global warming and energy, green buildings, investments in sustainability sectors, and other sustainability issues
* Provide guidance for formulating and executing an actionable plan for reducing carbon emissions in order to achieve carbon neutrality
The work and advice of this council will help inform a decision about becoming a Regular Signatory of the ACUPCC.
I welcome your continued involvement on this important issue and fully expect you to engage with the advisory council when they come to campus (at a date yet to be determined in the fall or spring).
Thank you for your impressive leadership on sustainability.
Sincerely,
Richard F. Celeste
PCC Charter Signatory
to sign by June 30, 2007 he can be a Charter Signatory of the Commitment. This might give him some incentive to sign soon, so that he has this title instead of just "Signatory". Currently 202 colleges have signed the commitment, so it's not a matter of meeting the 200 Goal, but it would still be cool to have this signed ASAP.
What do you all think?
Could we use this as leveraging power to get this signed sooner?
-Sandhya
Presidents and chancellors may play several different roles as signatories to the Commitment. Here are the key roles and definitions:
Signatory - a president or chancellor who signs the Commitment. Goal: 1,000 or more signatories by December 2009.
Charter Signatory - a president or chancellor who signs the Commitment by June 30, 2007. Goal: 200 or more charter signatories.
Leadership Circle - signatories who have agreed to help lead the initiative, promote it, and recruit colleagues to join. Any interested signatory may join the Leadership Circle through December 2007.
Steering Committee - a smaller group of Leadership Circle members selected by the group to facilitate its efforts and guide the initiative. The Steering Committee will be established in March 2007.
Meeting with Dick Celeste 3rd Week:
-He already knows about the PCC and our push for it, he just doesn't know we are the faces behind it.
-Via Beth Brooks, Celeste is creating a President's Advisory Committee of External Experts on energy consumption &
I would encourage everyone to view any and all of the amazing presentations available on the TED website [ted.com] because there is a wealth of information for your thirsty brains. Soak it up big guy. Just soak it up.
EnAct's future officers
1) What should be the structure of EnAct leadership? The idea of 3 tri-chairs was popular at the last meeting. Do we actually need 4 co-chairs to accomplish all of our ambitious plans, given the inconsistency of the block plan and our presumably increasingly academically intense lives and tighter schedules? Laura Parker told me she thinks 4 chairs is what we need. In addition, I think it is important to have a Treasurer; Secretary; Outreach Head; and Internet Pointperson within EnAct. Ideally for me these positions and their responsibility would be covered by people who are not also EnAct chairs, but I imagine some chairs will double in these positions. Laura Parker would be a great Treasurer given her experience, and she has expressed some interest in this. Wiley Roberts expressed some interest in being the Internet Pointperson. Should we omit or add any positions or have them at all? Thoughts in general?
2) Should we have elections for officer positions to give a clear authority and legitimacy to the officers, or simply determine who will be the officers by finding consensus through a roundtable discussion, or do the former if the latter doesn't narrow the field to the correct possitions? How should people be eligible to run - personal decision alone, or the requirement of nomination by others?
3) Who is running for officer positions? I know Katie Eberle and David Sullivan mentioned that they think they will run for chairs. I know I am considering doing so as well while also pondering how that would relate to my position as chair of the Climate Change CC subgroup. Anyone interested in the non-chair officer positions?
Charlie
Some Ideas for the Future
2008 Linnemann Speaker
Thanks to everyone who attended the Linnemann Lecture last night, and I wanted to promote next year's lecture and student involvement in the process. To the best of my knowledge, there will be a meeting Block 1 next year led by Sally Meyer and Sharon Neely to get everyone involved (I'll repost once I get the exact date). So start thinking about your favorite environmental luminaries who might be willing to talk at CC. So who do you think should be our next speaker?
New subtitle for blog?
1) Include "EnAct-sponsored" since it is EnAct that created it and since EnAct is is seeking to facilitate bettern communication and coordination within the CC green movement, and would like to be recognized for that role.
2)I suggest we call it "Colorado College's green movement" without the capitals since it's not an official title.
3) I think we should only include reference to "student" when next to "green movement," not as part of "student-inspired," since I think the latter's a bit to long.
4) Make the forum for the green movement directly, rather than to address it, to give a direct sense of ownership of the blog to all members of the green movement.
My suggestion:
"A forum for Colorado College's student green movement - hosted by EnAct"
or include reference to EnAct in the top of the right-hand section of the page, rather than in the top title bar ... like above the "It's not easy being Kermit"
Next Meeting
We should:
- Plan an 8th block timeline for the PCC campaign
- David Amster-O should explain his "Town Meeting" Csprings Renewable Energy event.
- Discuss ways to present ourselves to Dick Celeste
- Plan to explain whats going on at the next EnAct meeting the following Tuesday.
Wind Credit Competition
Katie Eberle, Jamie Storrs and whoever else that is interested. Walt Hecox wants a "crap sheet" on how poorly CC compares to its main liberal arts competitors at buying wind power. The five schools ranked above CC by U.S. News are Oberlin College, Bates College, Macalaster College, Mout Holyoke College and Barnard College. The five below are: Scripps College, Bucknell University, Trinity College, Lafayette College and Kenyon College. I will take the top 5, the rest are out in the open. All we need to figure out is how much wind power these schools buy, what percentage of their energy is wind power and have they had student wind credit competitions. I emailed John D. CC's statistics. Cool. Thanks.
Board Meeting Change of Date
I went to a seriously unnanounced luncheon/Q & A with Dick Celeste this afternoon. There were only 6 kids and heaps of food, and we had Celeste to ourselves for an hour to ask whatever we wanted to ask. MAIN POINT:
THE NEXT BOARD MEETING IS MAY 16-17 (NOT THIS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AS I WAS TOLD AT THE LAST CSC MEETING)
WE NOW HAVE THE ENTIRE BLOCK TO WORK ON THE PCC AND THE PETITION so everyone hold yer horses. I'm sorry I didn't know this earlier, but now we do, so we have more time to revise and consider our work with the petition and the proposal.
That said, the petition is at the Worner Desk, and I have flyers ready and waiting to be taped in bathroom stalls the campus over. If you'd like to help, shoot me an email and I'll drop some off.
Also, Dick Celeste has open office hours every monday afternoon in Perkins lounge, and Charlie and I were thinking that, as a group, we should go and discuss this PCC movement with him, as well as introduce ourselves fully as the next organizers of EnAct. Next Monday-- who's in?
"Greening the Ghetto"
Majora Carter a speaker for the CC Urbanists Speaker Series, presented an incredibly inspiring solution for The South Bronx and other publicly neglected communities: "Green the Ghetto". Her non-profit organization Sustainable South Bronx is working to install green roofs, offer ecological stewardship training and create at least 600 local jobs revolving around preserving environmental integrity. She is full of fiery energy, realism and dedication to her community. Thanks to Majora Carter and Ken Farmer for a great presentation. Check out Sustainable South Bronx at: www.ssbx.org
The petition needs to be MUCH stronger than the last LEED petition as this is a much larger issue(we need to prove that the student body is educated and aware + Sign on the majority of the student body)
Questions that come to mind:
1)is the PCC currently a topic of discussion for the board? I'm guessing that they know its floating around.
2)Can we hold a successful student campaign/petition/AND revise the report in a few days... I would imagine not.
3)If we have all block for the report/petition/campaign will it be more effective... my answer is yes.
4)How much does the time of year matter for Celeste/the Board to agree on the PCC?----- I have no clue. Does J.Delahunt know?
I am voting on a full 8th block effort for the PCC Campaign.
-DS
PCC imm-ed-iate-ly
The next CSC meeting hasn't been planned yet, and the next Board meeting is THIS THURSDAY & FRIDAY.
This means that we have two paths we can take with the PCC:
a) We need to get the PCC report/proposal in ASAP -as in tomorrow afternoon- so that the Board knows what's going on and that we're pressuring for this, or
b) Gather serious support for the PCC and get it completely refined so we can submit the whole chunk of paper + petition by the end of the block to both Celeste and the Board so mull over for the summer.
What's our stance on this? Decisions on PCC action need to be made by this evening.
